Keep Your Eye on the Ball! Advice for Success in Massage or Spa Business

You can do it! Keep going

I wanted to remind you to set your goals for the week, and to keep your focus on those weekly goals and your big goals as well. If you do not set regular goals and review your goals daily, or at least every couple of days, rewrite them, keep them top of mind, you will make much slower progress when it comes to reaching your goals.

I also wanted to remind you to be consistent when it comes to putting yourself out there, and letting people know how you can help them, what you do, and to be yourself. One of the things I did when I first started using print advertising and marketing my business in my local community was to put out some creative, silly marketing that a lot of people thought was unprofessional…

Personally, I think massage can have an element of fun to it. I don’t think we have to be all serious! It’s massage therapy. It’s not brain surgery. I like to have a more light-hearted marketing, and branding.

My ads were kind of attention-getting. They got the attention of somebody in my local community who was moving away and had a practice that they needed somebody to step into and take over. That was how I ended up with one of my first opportunities to own my own business. It was through being my silly, crazy self!

I can’t stress enough to just put yourself out there, say what’s on your mind, say what’s on your heart, let people know how you can help them, and just keep on going each day. Review your goals, decide what action steps you can take that day, even if they’re very small. Maybe you can make a connection. Maybe you can follow up with somebody, or you can contact a local networking group and find out when their next meeting is (and get it in your schedule).

Every step you take you take create an effect, and it can have a much bigger impact than you would ever think. I never thought that posting that silly advertisement in the local paper about hot stone massage would lead to owning my first business in a shopping center. You can’t know where things are going to lead, and that’s the whole reason why you just really need to step out in faith, and be consistent, focus on your goals, and just keep going.

If I can give you any piece of advice for being an entrepreneur, for being successful in the massage or spa business, it’s to just keep going every day. Figure out a marketing plan and do it for the next 10 to 12 weeks. Then, review and see what you did that worked well and refine it. Do more of what worked well, let a few things that aren’t working so well drop off, and add in some new things that you’ve been wanting to try, and just keep on going like that.

Give yourself enough time to really test things, and to really see if something is working or not. I put out regular newspaper ads every week for a while before I started to see results. But I was reaching a lot of people, a lot more people than I could have reached on my own. I don’t know that I’d necessarily recommend doing a print news ad today. I would probably recommend getting started with Facebook ads and building up your warm audience, and then, retargeting them. Try something, jump in there, and don’t give up too quickly.
